New questionnaire for people with unexplained muscle symptoms
The Myotonia Symptom Checker is a short online questionnaire that anyone concerned about their muscle symptoms can complete. Developed and validated by neuromuscular specialists and patient advocates, it helps people to characterise their symptoms and directs them to seek medical support.
Although this Symptom Checker helps to identify whether an individual’s pattern of muscle symptoms might be associated with myotonia, it does not make a diagnosis. People are encouraged to download their responses so that they can discuss them with their doctor. The Symptom Checker includes scenarios that can trigger myotonia but may not be part of general medical consultations, given that these disorders are rarely encountered outside neuromuscular clinics.
Myotonia Symptom Checker aims to speed up the diagnostic process for anyone with clear signs of myotonia, or a relevant family history. The goal is to increase awareness of the rare myotonic disorders, and to empower clinicians in general practice to refer suspected cases to neuromuscular specialists.
Specialist clinicians can also use the Myotonia Symptom Checker as part of new-patient assessment.
Professor Yann Péréon introduced the symptom checker to a specialist audience at the 4 th eNMD congress in Munich, Germany, in November 2024. Click here for more details: Scientific session
